Course Description

Cultural humility is a framework new to libraries that has the promise to change the approach to DEI within library spaces. Cultural humility can operate on two levels: the interpersonal for individuals and systems level for organizations. In this workshop, participants will use andragogy-designed active learning strategies to examine their identity to focus on their role as a colleague and as a professional. The facilitator will link the concepts of cultural humility to library work. Participants will learn actionable strategies to practice cultural humility as a library worker with colleagues and patrons. This course aims to aid library workers with knowledge about their identity as a critical departure point for the practice of cultural humility.

Learning objectives for this session include
  1. Participants will be able to describe the difference between cultural humility and cultural competence
  2. Participants will be able to apply strategies to engage with cultural humility in their library practice
  3. Participants will write an intentional action plan to adopt cultural humility as a colleague
