Library Management for Beginners: Everyday Negotiations
Managers and leaders frequently find themselves maneuvering through a variety of situations such as obtaining buy-in, defending library resources and services, and resolving conflicts. An effective negotiating strategy can be key to successfully reaching an agreement where both sides feel like they have benefited. While negotiating is a much needed skill for information professionals and managers to possess, there is often hesitation to attempt it. This two hour course is designed to provide the basic skills and tools managers need to successfully understand how to approach daily situations and problems through negotiation techniques and to alleviate some of the anxiety associated with the word “negotiating.”
- Identify key areas where negotiating and compromising skills can be applied
- Define the stages of the negotiating process
- Develop a planned bargaining approach
- Assess the effectiveness of a negotiation
- Examine common mistakes made during a negotiation
New or experienced managers in any type of library
Homework Expectations and Completion Requirements:
- Students will participate in class discussion and complete individual assignments.
