Taking A "Paws"-- Kitten Cuddle Puddle with Barnie's Place Feline Rescue

With over 3,400 students, the University of Missouri College of Engineering is a high-pressure academic environment. To support student well-being, the Engineering Library and Technology Commons (ELTC)—a key resource hub—hosts the Kitten Cuddle Puddle, a Finals Week event in partnership with Barnie’s Place Feline Rescue. Students interact with adoptable cats in a calming space designed to reduce stress and encourage self-care.

This event is one of several ELTC outreach efforts, including the Shamrock Tea, New Student BBQ, and library programming such as book bedazzling and paper crafts, all aimed at building community and supporting student success. The presentation will cover the evolution of these initiatives, lessons learned, and considerations for forming meaningful partnerships. Feed the Funnel

-

Hungry children struggle to focus in school, hindering their potential. In response, the Lillian DesMarias Youth Library organized "Feed the Funnel" in Chillicothe, MO, with collaborator, The Pack Shack, aiming to pack 20,000 meals for local families facing food insecurity. With over 16% of the population below the poverty line, the event sought to alleviate hunger and provide essential nutrition. Feed the Funnel received strong community support, with donations and over 100 volunteers packing meals. An Eagle Scout project also established The Sharing Shelf at the library—a free pantry offering non-perishable food items with the motto, “take what you need, leave what you can.” These initiatives promote a food-secure and compassionate community. Participants and the community learn the impact of addressing food insecurity and how events like Feed the Funnel make a difference. The project highlights the importance of compassion and solidarity in creating a supportive environment, illustrating that every action helps build a food-secure community with the library leading the charge.

Building Community Through Body-Mind Wellness Programming

-

Learn how Glendale Library, Arts & Culture utilized partnerships to build community and move from an annual mental health resource fair to create Adult and Senior body-mind wellness programs throughout the year. Programs that will be discussed in the session include a form of dance therapy called Bailoterapia, a figure drawing class celebrating bodies of all sizes and gender expressions, and workshops led by an integrative health specialist. In 2023, we partnered with our local Resource Center for Aging to address the rise of "Solo Agers" or older adults aging in place, by themselves, or with little to no family nearby. Program topics included Advanced Directives, Whole Health Nutrition, Scams, and Social Engagement. This monthly series created a dedicated community who formed their own support network that now meets regularly on their own. Session attendees will learn strategies to develop partnerships and build community to create inclusive body-mind wellness programming.
