Job Summary: 

Under the direction and supervision of the County Law Librarian, the Assistant Law Librarian is primarily responsible for providing reference assistance to the library’s patrons. Participates in planning of programs, policies or objectives for own work group and department. Work environment is active and rewarding.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interacts with library patrons to assist them in selecting materials and meeting informational needs. Performs basic searches using electronic, resources, databases and print sources to answer patron inquiries.
  • Oversees activities in the Law Library in the absence of the Law Librarian
  • Instructs and trains new employees. Provides guidance and support to staff in the use of bibliographic and computer-assisted services. May plan and review work of other employees.
  • Assists with collection development and maintenance. Participates in reviewing and selecting databases.
  • Provides educational services to county library staff, the public, attorneys, elected officials and others. Teaches classes and makes presentations.
  • May provide copy cataloging services for law library materials.
  • Participates in outreach services to the community
  • Keeps statistical records of unit activities and prepares appropriate reports.

  • Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers. Candidate will preferability have ability, experience, and willingness to significantly assist in back-office administrative tasks along with budgeting including use of Euna Budget Pro software; Onbase; Lawson; vendor relations and contracts; and intra-County department relations such as IT, Budget office, Treasurer, Auditor, County Attorney, and Human Resources.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge:

Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school preferred; knowledge of current library practices and technologies.

Experience:

Candidates without a MLS or MLIS degree from an ALA accredited school must have worked three or more years in a public or private law library setting, or have a Masters of Legal Studies, Doctor of Jurisprudence, or a bachelor’s degree with paralegal certification and experience or equivalent and one year or more in a public or private law library setting. County employees with requisite skill set, six years  of experience, and a bachelor’s degree will be considered.

Skills and Abilities:

Must demonstrate strong customer service orientation; Computer skills; good verbal and written communication; supervisory and organizational skills; interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public, attorneys, other employees and elected officials; ability to complete assigned projects in a timely manner.

Special Requirements:

Night and weekend work required.

Daily use of hands and/or fingers to grasp, handle, pick-up pinch, type or feel; Daily standing, walking, sitting, talking and listening; Frequent reaching with hands or arms; Occasional lifting of objects up to 25 pounds, climbing or balancing, stooping, crouching or kneeling; Close vision, ability to distinguish color, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily in a climate-controlled open office area, shared with other employees and open to public and office traffic.  Rare exposure to accidents or physical hazards.  Noise level is moderate.
