12 month, Tenure – Track Position / Assistant Librarian
The LSUS Noel Memorial Library seeks a user-focused, outcomes-based, collaborative professional for the position of Director of Access and Discovery, a full-time, 12-month tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Librarian, reporting to the Dean of the Noel Memorial Library. The director will provide strategic leadership over technical services such as collection strategies, discovery and metadata services, library technologies, resource sharing, scholarly communications, and user experience. The director will develop and implement divisional goals, priorities, and assessment measures that align with the library and university strategic plans. The director will supervise, mentor, and evaluate faculty, staff, and student employees within the division, and additionally serve on behalf of the Dean, when designated.
Duties and Responsibilities
Collection Strategies and Resource Sharing
Lead collection strategy initiatives and acquisition operations that support institutional curricula, research, and community engagement. Develop sustainable collection models informed by usage data, curricular needs, and budget priorities. Collaborate with special collections and digital scholarship personnel to expand digital access to unique collections. Provide leadership and oversight for document delivery and resource sharing services. Use assessment data and service analytics to improve workflows, expand resource-sharing partnerships, and enhance user satisfaction.
Discovery Services and Library Systems
Provide leadership for library content and discovery platforms, metadata creation, cataloging operations, and supporting infrastructure. Develop initiatives that enhance discoverability, accessibility, and integration of resources. Serve as the library’s liaison with campus ITS and the LOUIS consortium systems administrator. Coordinate metadata practices across physical collections, electronic resources, digital collections, and institutional repositories. Serve as original cataloger. Monitor emerging technologies, including AI-enhanced discovery and service tools, and recommend adoption strategies consistent with institutional goals. Ensure reliable, secure, and accessible access to student technology, library systems, and digital resources.
Open Education and Scholarship
Champion a user-centered approach to promote open scholarship, open educational resources, and research dissemination initiatives. Monitor trends in scholarly publishing, open access, and transformative agreements. Oversee the efforts of the Scholarly Communications Librarian.
Data Assessment and User Experience
Develop assessment strategies that measure the effectiveness of electronic resources and discovery services. Recommend emerging technologies, enhancements, and user-centered design trends that improve operational efficiency and user engagement. Create consistent assessment and feedback loops for review and evaluation to sustain and improve services and workflows. Oversee Affordable Learning efforts and reporting requirements. Lead usability studies and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance resource discovery and user success.
Campus and Professional Engagement
Consult with library leadership in developing a plan for professional development, scholarship, and service relevant to the library and university’s strategic plan. Demonstrate sustained efforts of contribution to the library, university, and professional community. Build strong partnerships with academic departments, faculty, student services, information technology, and regional library organizations. Advocate for library services and resources through targeted outreach and training.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree from an ALA accredited library or information science OR;
- an advanced degree beyond the bachelor’s from a regionally accredited college or university plus varied experience in college and university libraries
- Experience working with electronic resources in an academic library
- Experience with COUNTER statistics, SUSHI harvesting, and assessment methods.
- Experience with metadata description protocols and standards (e.g., Dublin Core, DACS, MARC)
- Ability to meet library tenure requirements by established university deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Ex Libris’ Alma and Primo library service platforms
- Experience managing digital preservation or content management platforms
- Experience with other library-related products (e.g,. EZProxy, ILLiad, LibGuides);
Salary: Commensurate with experience or $60,000
