Summary of Position

Performs complex tasks requiring independent judgment and action in managing the Technical Services Department. Experience in library automated services using an integrated library system. The position oversees the library Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC), trains and supervises the technical services staff, and is responsible for a wide range of collection development activities related to the purchase and receipt of library resources in various formats.

Education and Experience

  • A Master’s Degree in Library Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association required with one-year experience as a cataloger.
  • Two years working in an academic environment and one-year supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Ability

  • Ability to manage, supervise and organize a technology driven department. 
  • Maintain and update the Policies and Procedures for the Technical Services Dept. to ensure a smooth and productive workflow.  
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of bibliographic control including MARC, AACR2, LCSH, and LC classification and able to produce original cataloging in an automated library system. 
  • Proficient in current technology and particularly those technologies directly related to the library. 
  • Design, initiate and lead projects/proposals, and bring them to closure. 
  • Perform complex tasks requiring organizational skills and independent judgment to manage multiple concurrent projects across library services.
  • Eagle Career Closet maintenance: selection, weeding, cataloging permanent items.
  • Ability to support collection development through faculty liaison activities, including selecting, reviewing literature and seeking input regarding the selection of library materials, and removing outdated materials.
  • Ability to conduct basic reference interview via phone, email, chat, in-person, knowledge of MLA and APA citation styles, and basic copyright laws.

Essential Functions

  • Proficiency with the integrated library system (ILS) to include bibliographic functions, vendor databases, and administrative websites. 
  • Manage the daily operations of the technical services department, supervise downloads and maintenance to the library Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC).
  • Oversee daily acquisitions operation, including coordinating workflow related to ordering, receiving, and claiming library materials; tracks expenditures and purchase orders as needed. 
  • Coordinates the library’s inter-library loan (ILL) program
  • Create and maintain support resources, such as research guides, online vides, and citation help.
  • Shares in scheduled reference desk duties, and works one night per week.
  • Train, schedule, and supervise the technical services staff. 
  • Keep accurate inventory of the library’s holdings of print and non-print materials; assist with weeding, statistical reports and quality control.
  • Maintains awareness of trends and developments in librarianship through study and professional meetings. Participate in campus committees, governance, and activities, as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as required or approved by the Dean of Library Services.
