Backstage Library Works is offering a special discount to Amigos members through the end of the year for digitization of 35 mm microfilm (their Reel Deal service). The normal price is $89 per reel but is available to Amigos members at the special rate of $75 per reel for through December 31st, 2025.
The Reel Deal offers:
- 8-bit grayscale master TIFF images, for archiving.
- 8-bit grayscale JPEG compressed derivative images, for access.
- Single-page, searchable PDF files, one file per image.
- One digital image per film frame, reflecting single pages or two-page spreads, as filmed.
- Files are named with the microfilm reel number and a sequential counter.
Libraries can upgrade to Reel Deal Plus, which adds between 12 and 15 cents per page to provide:
- Multi-page, searchable PDF files, bound by issue or segment.
- Reels filmed as two-page spreads will be auto-split to one page per TIFF.
- Structural metadata reflected in file names will be based on information gathered from the first pages of each new issue or segment, or from eye-legible microfilm targets.
- File directory structure will follow the metadata collected. For example, directories may be organized by issue or date.
- During thumbnail-level manual review, eye-legible targets and will be moved to a separate folder.
