BioOne’s March 2026 update highlights a transformative achievement for scholarly communication and for libraries that rely on sustainable access to biological, ecological, and environmental research. The organization has officially reached the sustainability threshold for its Subscribe to Open (S2O) pilot, unlocking 71 journal titles in the 2026 volume year as fully Open Access. BioOne reports that this milestone was made possible through the support of global consortia and library partners who participated in the model.

This success marks the first time BioOne has reached its inaugural S2O target. The participating cohort includes 54 societies, museums, and research organizations, representing the largest group of independent publishers ever brought together under a single S2O program. The 2026 group also includes first time S2O contributors from Japan, Kenya, China, and Brazil. As a result, every article published in these 71 titles during 2026 will be openly accessible in perpetuity, strengthening the global research ecosystem and increasing the reach of scholarship across disciplines.

The milestone coincides with the 25th anniversary of BioOne Complete, the flagship aggregation that brings together research from societies and independent publishers in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences. Reflecting on the progress of the past quarter century, BioOne emphasizes that collaborative models like S2O demonstrate how libraries and publishers can work together to sustain nonprofit scholarly communication.

As an Amigos Member Discount Services vendor, BioOne supports cost effective access to high quality scientific publishing. The success of the S2O model provides an immediate benefit to member libraries by expanding Open Access availability while maintaining sustainable investment pathways that align with library values.
