Information Literacy: Adapting to the New Framework

In February of 2015, the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) adopted the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. This framework sharply contrasts with the standards of information literacy instruction developed in the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. Where the Standards listed performance indicators and outcomes to assess during information literacy instruction, the new Framework applies a much more theoretical and interpretable approach.

In this two-day course, we will inspect the six frames that make up the new framework, comparing them with the rather rigid structure of the old competency standards. We will also identify possible curriculum examples in response to each frame, all the while discussing what the new framework predicts for the future of information literacy.

• Outline the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education
• Compare the Framework with the older Information Literacy Competency Standards
• Explain the purposes of Knowledge Practices and Dispositions in the Framework
• Identify curriculum examples in response to each frame
• Discuss the implications of the new framework for information literacy instruction

Target Audience:
Geared toward staff with responsibility for information literacy instruction in their library or university.
