Circulation Clerk I / II Job Description

General Position Description:

Operates under the immediate supervision of the Administration, performs clerical and other library work as required.

Duties:

  1. Shelves library materials and reads shelves for accuracy.
  2. Performs circulation desk procedures, such as checking in and checking out materials, registering patrons, and collecting fines.
  3. Checks in deliveries of Missouri Evergreen materials.
  4. Does keyboarding and filing.
  5. Assists with library programs and displays.
  6. Assists patrons with ready-reference questions and reader advisory, bibliographic instruction, and database searching.
  7. Answers directional questions and refers patrons to appropriate personnel.
  8. Performs daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning duties as scheduled.
  9. Completes tasks or projects as assigned by Administration.
  10. Performs other related duties as required.
  11. Tests to gain Public Notary license and/or Passport Acceptance Agent license as requested.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  1. Working knowledge of library methods and procedures.
  2. Ability to operate library equipment properly including personal computer, laptop, printer, scanner, copy machine, fax machine, calculator, audiovisual equipment, laminator, and microfilm.
  3. Keyboarding and filing ability.
  4. Working knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
  5. Ability to assist with the operation of personal devices including cell phones, laptops, and tablets.
  6. Willingness to maintain skills in the above-mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate library skills learning experiences.

Physical Demands:

  1. Sitting, kneeling, standing, walking, climbing, and stooping.
  2. Bending, twisting, and reaching.
  3. Talking, hearing, and using the telephone.
  4. Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  5. Handling, processing, sorting, and shelving materials.
  6. Keyboarding, writing, and filing.
  7. Pushing and pulling objects weighing 50-75 pounds on a book cart.
  8. Mobility: travel to alternate worksite, meetings, and programs outside the library.

Mental Requirements:

  1. Communication skills: both written and oral.
  2. Ability to comprehend and follow instructions.
  3. Basic mathematical skills such as calculating fines and making change.
  4. Time management skills: set priorities and meet assigned deadlines.

Education and Experience:

  1. High school diploma, GED, or HiSET required.
  2. One (1) year customer service experience required.
