Position Summary:
The Circulation Tech assists in the supervision of the circulation department of the library including student assistants. The Circulation Tech is responsible for a range of activities including: interlibrary loan and document delivery, is responsible for course reserves and nursing reserves, coordinates missing book searches, mends damaged library materials, is responsible for learning and implementing policies and procedures governing circulation, reserves, and ILL.

The Circulation Tech reports to the Access Services Librarian and collaborates with library staff and faculty.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate an attitude and behaviors that reflect the core values and mission of the university and the Dulaney-Browne Llibrary.
  • Shift Supervisor of Circulation Services: Provides excellent customer service while manning the circulation desk and ensuring student workers follow policy and procedures while completing their daily checklists. Charged with various circulation tasks included in the procedures manuals such as checking items in and out. Position is usually scheduled for about 50% of time to be at Circulation.
  • Assists in interlibrary loan and document delivery process, including lending and borrowing on OCLC (special training required), locating books and photocopying or scanning articles as needed, preparing incoming and outgoing shipments, communicating with patrons and libraries, maintaining statistics and reports, and document delivery to faculty and staff.
  • Processes course reserve requests accurately and in a timely manner, including communicating with faculty members, interpreting policy and copyright rules (in consultation with the Access Services Librarian if needed), entering items into the online catalog, preparing them for the shelf, and removing and returning items as required.
  • Manages Nursing reserve materials.
  • Manages the library’s mending and repair processes.
  • Assists with processing new materials to make them shelf-ready and assists in training student workers in the same.
  • Tracks overdue items and communicates with students and courtesy card holders via telephone and email regarding library circulation accounts. Adds faculty and staff to the faculty overdues list as appropriate.
  • Ensures that library resources are shelved correctly and tracks missing books.
  • May serve as evening staff supervisor: closes the library at the end of the evening shift ensuring that the facility is vacated and the contents are safely secured.
  • Assists with library shelf maintenance as needed, re-shelving and shelf reading the collection, and picking up in-house circulation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

  • Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery.
  • Constantly visually identifies, observes, and assesses.
  • Frequently communicates with university constituents.
  • Frequently remains in a stationary position (standing and/or sitting). Frequently moves to accomplish tasks and/or to get from one worksite to another.
  • Frequently moves books and common office materials.

Working Conditions:

  1. Work is primarily indoors, but at times may be required to be in an outdoor environment when traveling between campus buildings or off campus.
  2. Will be exposed to frequent noise caused by telephones and office machines.
  3. Scheduled hours will normally be 3 pm to midnight, Sunday through Thursday, during regular semesters; hours will vary during prefinals/finals and over the summer and holiday periods. Some overtime may be required.
  4. Off-campus, state and regional travel may be required.

The maximum anticipated hourly rate for this position is $12.40.

Required Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including cultural sensitivity and competencies.
  • Superior computer skills with specific knowledge and experience with MS Outlook, Access, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Experience with OCLC WorldCat and library management systems is preferred.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to foresee problems and prevent them by taking action.
  • Ability to maintain excellent attendance and regular work hours.

Required Experience
A high school diploma or GED is required. One year of work experience in a library setting is preferred.
