The Cataloging Librarian, under direction, coordinates the catalog department in the cataloging, classifying, accessioning, linking, and labeling of library materials so that they are accessible to library patrons. This position creates and maintains metadata for library materials in all formats and leads the development of metadata policies including descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata schemas for digital collections appropriate for the library's current and future content management systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Catalogs and classifies monographic materials of classes using cataloging rules and schedules. Supervises physical processing of monographic materials in all formats.
- Catalogs and classifies non-State-adopted materials, print or non-print, for the Library, using a classification schedule. Catalogs and classifies State-adopted materials and supervises the processing of those materials.
- Catalogs theses, honors theses, dissertations, student papers, oral history interviews, manuscripts, and maps.
- Completes original cataloging, prepares workforms for input onto the online system with proper fixed fields, tags, indicators, delimiters and exporting records to the Library’s integrated system.
- Makes necessary changes in order to conform to library practices. Reviews new subject headings accepted by the Library.
- Establishes and maintains policies and procedures for the operation of the Catalog Department. Aids in problem solving with regard to the cataloging and authority subsystems of the Library system. Solves problems in records and in Library System.
- Directs operators regarding choice of records, modifications, call numbers, subject headings, cataloging rules, and local practices.
- Coordinates, supervises, and participates in the maintenance of the database created by the cataloging module of the library system.
- Attends meetings, participates in special projects, and serves on committees relating to the library, the University, and consortia.

- Manages daily work of the cataloging department including original cataloging, copy cataloging, metadata creation, and database maintenance; supervises, trains and evaluates student and library staff.
- Responsible for oversight of all aspects of record quality and catalog integrity.
- Performs original and copy cataloging, creates and maintains metadata for library materials in all formats, including books, serials, audio-visual, digital and electronic resources.
- Creates original bibliographic and non-MARC metadata records following RDA, AACR2, Library of Congress Classification
- Schedules and subject headings and other non-MARC metadata related formats (e.g., Dublin Core). Collaborates with other areas of the Library to provide cataloging and metadata technical support.
- Leads the development of metadata policies including descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata schemas for digital collections appropriate for the library's current and future systems and other content management systems.
- Participates in development and maintenance of the library's discovery service (currently WMS).
- Works closely with other library departments in developing weeding project plans, generating the reports and batch data processing that are necessary for collection weeding projects.
- Compiles and analyzes annual cataloging statistics for reporting to internal and external agencies.
- Maintains knowledge of, and engages in, continuous professional development to keep up with current and developing standards and practices for metadata and cataloging.
- Leads library efforts and collaborates with library faculty to maintain the library website.
- Serves as liaison and leads efforts between internal and external partners on collaborative cataloging and metadata projects. Serves as primary liaison to OCLC.
- Education – Master’s degree in Library Science
- Experience – No prior experience required.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Preferred Education and Experience
- Two or more years of experience performing cataloging and metadata functions
- Cataloging, indexing, or metadata coursework beyond the basic introductory level and/or successful cataloging work experience.
- Experience adjusting priorities according to changing needs.
- Web and visual design experience, including an understanding of web programming languages such as HTML and CSS.
- Experience working in a shared decision-making environment as both a teammate and a project leader.
Knowledge and Abilities
- OCLC or a similar bibliographic utility,
- LC and Dewey classification systems,
- Accepted standards such as AACR2 and MARC
- Microcomputer applications
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Knowledge and Abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge of collection assessment processes and procedures.
- Demonstrated supervisory ability of full time employees.
- Demonstrated ability to perform original cataloging.
- Experience cataloging Spanish language materials.
- Demonstrated knowledge of both traditional cataloging practice and of emerging methods, including a current awareness of national trends and development in cataloging, metadata standards, and information retrieval including RDA and FRBR.
- Aptitude for accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to work with a culturally diverse population.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to take initiative.
Licensing / Professional Certification – MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited institution
Supervision of Others
- This position generally supervises employees.
- Weekend and evening work may be required
- Occasional travel.
Starting Salary: $53,000 -$55,000
