MANAGING LIBRARIAN OR LIBRARY MANAGER
AUSTIN PUBLIC LIBRARY
SALARY: $27.61 – $35.83
Commensurate

The Austin Public Library is looking for a forward-thinking and community-focused librarian or library manager to lead a customer-service oriented staff. The ideal candidate will work to shape and enhance the libraries’ role as a neighborhood focal point.

We are especially interested in candidates who have experience working in urban environments, who are skilled in working with youths and adults experiencing social anxieties associated with homelessness, mental health, chemical dependency, and life.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  1. Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
  2. Experience working with customers who may be experiencing homelessness and/or social or mental anxieties.
  3. Experience working as a manager or assistant manager of an urban public library facility.
  4. Experience working with children and teens in an urban public library.

MANAGING LIBRARIAN

DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  1. Develops long and short-term plans. Stays abreast of library and archives issues and trends.
  2. Assists in development of budget and grant applications, may direct or monitor work unit expenditures.
  3. Provides input into the development of policies and procedures for library. Coordinates system-wide library activities, such as collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, processing, mending, withdrawals, recycling of books, and circulation support.
  4. Advises library staff on library procedures and issues, including selection, collection development, cataloging and classification, processing, intellectual freedom, and/or preservation.
  5. Provides outreach services to the public. Directs and develops public relations for work unit activities. Conducts meetings, training, and public programs. Interprets and explains policies to public and staff. Represents the City of Austin and Austin Public Library to the public. Coordinates customer service hotline.
  6. Selects library materials and develops collections for system, branch, or special collections. Provides original cataloging in all formats. Compiles bibliographies.
  7. Plans, develops, and manages work-unit fund raising activities and administer spending of donations.
  8. Oversees maintenance, security, and physical attractiveness of facility, grounds, and equipment.
  9. Coordinates with other libraries and organizations concerning resource sharing and coordination of services.
  10. Oversees cash handling and reporting. Prepares reports, collects and monitors statistics.

Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling and recommendation for dismissal.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of City practice, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of fiscal planning and budget preparation.
  • Knowledge of reference tools and procedures.
  • Knowledge of current and retrospective literature.
  • Knowledge of archival issues and trends.
  • Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and principles.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Skill in collection development.
  • Ability to plan and present effective programs and/or exhibits.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to stay current on archival issues and trends.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with other City employees and the public.
  • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited university, plus four (4) years as a professional librarian, two (2) years of which as a lead or supervisor.

Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Business Management, Education, English, Literature, Social Work, or another related field, plus four (4) years of relevant experience, two (2) years of which were in a lead or supervisory capacity.
