DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

LIBRARY MANAGER:

  1. Develops long and short-term plans for library branch.
  2. Assists in development of budget and grant applications, which may include directing or monitoring work unit expenditures.
  3. Advises library staff on library procedures and issues.
  4. Provides outreach services to the public. Directs and develops public relations for library branch activities. Coordinates customer service hotline.
  5. Plans, develops, and manages library branch fund-raising activities and administers spending of donations.
  6. Oversees maintenance, security, and physical attributes of facility, grounds, and equipment.
  7. Conducts meetings, training, and public programs. Interprets and explains policies to public and staff.
  8. Coordinates with other libraries and organizations concerning resource sharing and coordination of services.
  9. Oversees cash handling and reporting. Prepares reports, collects and monitors statistics.
  10. Represents the City of Austin and Austin Public Library to the public.

Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised: Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling and recommendation for dismissal

MANAGING LIBRARIAN:

  1. Develops long and short-term plans. Stays abreast of library and archives issues and trends.
  2. Assists in development of budget and grant applications, may direct or monitor work unit expenditures.
  3. Provides input into the development of policies and procedures for library. Coordinates system-wide library activities, such as collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, processing, mending, withdrawals, recycling of books, and circulation support.
  4. Advises library staff on library procedures and issues, including selection, collection development, cataloging and classification, processing, intellectual freedom, and/or preservation.
  5. Provides outreach services to the public. Directs and develops public relations for work unit activities. Conducts meetings, training, and public programs. Interprets and explains policies to public and staff. Represents the City of Austin and Austin Public Library to the public. Coordinates customer service hotline.
  6. Selects library materials and develops collections for system, branch, or special collections. Provides original cataloging in all formats. Compiles bibliographies.
  7. Plans, develops, and manages work-unit fund raising activities and administer spending of donations.
  8. Oversees maintenance, security, and physical attractiveness of facility, grounds, and equipment.
  9. Coordinates with other libraries and organizations concerning resource sharing and coordination of services.
  10. Oversees cash handling and reporting. .Prepares reports, collects and monitors statistics.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with other City employees and the public.
  • Ability to develop collections.
  • Ability to plan and present programs and/or exhibits.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.

MANAGING LIBRARIAN:

  • Knowledge of library procedures, systems, and techniques.

  • Ability to stay current on archival issues and trends.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with other City employees and the public.
  • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Knowledge of customer service principles and experience providing customer service
  2. Experience in leading others and/or supervising the work of others
  3. Experience in managing a high volume of workflow and workload
  4. Experience in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing
  5. Experience in working with people of diverse backgrounds
  6. Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with other City employees and the public

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • LIBRARY MANAGER:
    • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Business Management, Education, English, Literature, Social Work, or another related field, plus four (4) years of relevant experience, two (2) years of which were in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • MANAGING LIBRARIAN:
    • Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited university, plus four (4) years as a professional librarian, two (2) years of which as a lead or supervisor.
