Mid-Continent Public Library is the largest library system in the Kansas City metropolitan area serving over 780,000 residents in Clay, Jackson, and Platte counties. Position Overview:
The Associate Director for Public Service is responsible for providing excellent customer service to all staff and customers. The Associate Director for Public Service interprets and implements the direction of the Library to assigned staff members in the areas of supervision, Board policy, procedures, programs, and collection development. The Associate Director for Public Service is responsible for clearing barriers to service.

Reports to: Chief Customer Experience Officer
Manages: Assigned Branch Managers

Essential Job Functions:

  • Manages Branch Managers and advises on branch operations
    • Interviews, selects and trains Branch managers
    • Participates in selection of candidates for branch salaried positions
    • Approves goals set by Branch Managers and evaluates completion
    • Participates in Branch employee discipline and termination, as needed
    • Leads monthly Branch Manager meeting
    • Leads quarterly Assistant Manager meetings
    • Makes regular and special visits to branch libraries observing operations and condition of facility
    • Leads in planning or coordination of facility changes
  • Monitors branch use and operations
  • Mediates external customer service
  • Possession of a valid driver license and a reliable personal vehicle for use in carrying out the duties of this position including transportation of materials and equipment(mileage reimbursed)

Non-Essential Job Functions:

  • Participates in local, state or national organizations, such as Public Library Association or American Library Association
  • Maintains Associate Director for Public Service intranet page
  • Contacts other like libraries to compare policies and procedures and investigate potential new projects

Required Skills:

  • Demonstrates proficiency in office productivity and library operations software

Experience and Training:

  • Master of Library Science degree issued by a library school of recognized standing is required
  • Minimum of 5 years library experience with manager responsibilities required

Essential Physical Abilities to be accomplished with or without reasonable accommodation are:

  • Clarity of speech and hearing which permits the employee to communicate effectively with the supervisor and other employees.
  • Vision which permits the employee to produce and review a wide variety of library materials, written correspondence, reports and related materials in both electronic and hard copy form.
  • Manual dexterity which permits the employee to operate a keyboard and any other assigned equipment to process library materials.
  • Personal mobility which permits the employee to monitor, supervise, and perform assigned library operations, and to attend Library district, community, and public meetings at various locations.
  • Tolerance for dust and mold which permits the employee to work with books and other library materials as well as working in older buildings.
