General Statement of Job
The Librarian I - Public Services provides reference and instruction services to students, faculty, staff, and community users; and develops, promotes, implements, maintains, and helps evaluate library programs and services.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Essential Functions:
- Provides reference and consultation services in person, by phone, and through the use of virtual reference technology.
- Provides library instruction in accordance with Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) guidelines for academic libraries and Library Services guidelines.
- Assists in developing, implementing, and assessing library instruction services.
- Serves as library liaison to assigned academic departments.
- Participates in collection development activities.
- Creates and maintains subject guides and related subject-specific electronic resources.
- Assists in developing and maintaining library webpage and social media content as assigned.
- Provides assistance and training to library patrons in the utilization of the library's online resources.
- Assists in developing and maintaining online collections and services.
- Assists with library programming.
- Assists with circulation services, as needed.
- Assists in training and supervising Library Public Services staff.
- Assists in maintaining current, accurate departmental files and records and procedures manuals.
- Maintains a professional knowledge of library and information science; keeps current on developments of specific job related fields.
- Participates in a variety of committees as assigned.
- Builds and maintains good public/working relationships with coworkers, students, faculty and staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Required Education and Experience
- American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science and/or Information Science required.
- At least two (2) years of demonstrated Library Instruction experience in classroom and online, preferred.
- Recent academic library experience, preferred.
- Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
- Strong background in electronic library resources.
- Demonstrated knowledge in traditional reference materials and equipment and automated library information systems.
- Ability to operate desktop computers and presentational equipment commonly found in classrooms.
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
- Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.
- Ability to adapt to constant change and periods of fast-paced, high-intensity work situations.
- Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a diverse, multi-cultural college population.

- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, managers, and the general public.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphics.
- Ability to apply practical understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

- Must have a valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance.
- Physical Requirements
- Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
- Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
- Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
- Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

- Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
- Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
- Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
- Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
- Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
- Standing particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.

- Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
