Controlled Vocabularies and Taxonomies

Are you working on a metadata project that could benefit from a specialized vocabulary? Do you find yourself feeling like existing vocabularies like the Library of Congress Subject Headings are a bit too one-size-fits-all? This course will cover the basics of taxonomy design and development of controlled vocabularies. Topics covered include types of controlled vocabularies, taxonomy planning and design, structure and relationships in a taxonomy, and taxonomy management and maintenance.
 

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand why a specialized vocabulary and/or taxonomy would be needed
  • Name the different types of controlled vocabularies
  • Learn the steps involved in taxonomy development and maintenance

Target Audience:
Any staff involved with cataloging, metadata or digtital initiatives wanting an overview of controlled vocabularies and taxonomies.

Prerequisites:
None

Homework Expectations and Completion Requirements:

  • There will be both in class and at home assignments to be completed.
  • It is designed for individual participation; each individual must register.
