Introduction to Archival Practice
This course provides an overview of archival practice for those librarians that suddenly find themselves working with archival material. The instructor will cover what constitutes an archive, working with collections, describing and organizing archival materials, creating a finding aid, and collection maintenance. Assisting patrons with archival requests, creating and implementing basic procedures, and useful workflows will also be covered.
Learning Objectives:
- Describing the difference between an archive and a library as well as how patrons can access and use archival materials.
- Using available resources to describe and organize new archival contributions.
- Implementing basic workflows, processes, and procedures to make archival work easier.
- Creating a basic archival finding aid.
Target Audience:
Librarians with little to no prior experience with archives.
Prerequisites:
None
Homework Expectations and Completion Requirements:
- Short readings will be assigned before each class. Short exercises will be completed during class. A final homework assignment will be to completed a short finding aid for a collection.
- It is designed for individual participation; each individual must register.
