Subject Headings and Subject Analysis

If your library patrons want a resource on a particular topic, they will make use of the subject headings, or standardized terms used to represent concepts, in your catalog. But how do you make sure the subject headings work for your patrons? This course will cover the theory behind controlled vocabularies for subject headings, the details of commonly used vocabularies, such as the Library of Congress Subject Headings, and the process of subject analysis, or determining what a resource is about.
 

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the process of subject analysis
  • Learn how to choose subject headings to reflect the content of a resource
  • Understand the structure of controlled vocabularies

Target Audience:
Staff with cataloging and classification duties.

None

Homework Expectations and Completion Requirements:

  • There will be a homework assignment at the end of the course.
  • It is designed for individual participation; each individual must register.
