Learn from the authors of Purpose-Based Library

Meet John Huber (Lean Library Management) and Steve Potter (public library administrator) at the August 24-25 Conference on the Purpose-Based Library in Kansas City, MO. The day and a half conference will examine the premises behind the book The Purpose-Based Library:

  • Survival depends on quicker, faster, better lean core services
  • Success depends on community/library partnerships and value-added metrics
  • Growth depends on libraries communicating, reflecting and pursuing their true purpose

During the conference we will become familiar with The Purpose-Based Library approach to developing an essential, sustainable, community based library and take the first steps in developing a work plan for implementing the Purpose Based Library approach.

Learning objectives include:

  • New ways to think about metrics
  • Reexamining customer self-driven services
  • Effectively leveraging the considerable footprint of libraries
  • Identifying and assessing community needs and realigning library services accordingly
  • Actively encouraging community fundraising
  • Offering cutting-edge services and programs

The day will begin with lunch followed by the opening Keynote presented by Huber and Potter. The tentative agenda is as follows:

  • Day One
    • Noon to 1:00 Lunch
    • 1:15 - 2:30 Introductions and Opening Keynote
    • 2:30 – 2:45 Break
    • 2:45 – 3:45 The Communities Pyramid
    • 3:45 – 4:00 Break
    • 4:00 – 4:45 Dashboard Metrics
    • 5:00 - Networking reception sponsored by OrangeBoy
  • Day Two
    • 9:00 – 12:00 Break out into facilitated workgroups

In these facilitated workgroups you will consider what you do now and how can you talk about it in a "Purpose Based" way. Other questions we will work through are:

  • What do you consider your top two/three programs you offer to the community?
  • Where does your current program fit in the pyramid?
  • How do you currently measure your top two/three programs you provide now?
  • How would you demonstrate a "value proposition" for the top two to three programs you offer now?
  • What are your community's greatest needs, or in other words, where do the largest cracks exist in the communities pyramid?
  • How would you demonstrate a "value proposition" for the top three to five programs you offer now?
