You Can Take It With You: "Read-It-Later" Applications to Stay Informed on Your Own Time and Device(s)

Registration is closed for this event
Maintaining current awareness of ongoing trends, technologies, cultural shifts, online forums, and new opportunities in librarianship remains daunting when faced with greater demands on our time, the vagaries of staying in touch with others, and a continuous flood of digital information. What tools do we have at our disposal to help capture, organize, manipulate, archive, and share this information? And in a way which accommodates OUR schedules, mobile lives, workflow, collaborative activities, and personal preferences for platforms on which to use it?

In this course, we will look at one invaluable, readily available (but underutilized) resource that provides a host of features to help meet and take on the challenges listed above: The "Read-It-Later" application. This course will focus in detail on one such application, "Instapaper," as a popular example…but also provide a list of similar tools which the participant can compare and contrast to help them decide what best meets their learning, planning, and organizational needs.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand ways in which "Read-It-Later " applications differ from and excel over traditional bookmarking, bookmarklets, and similar information capturing tools.
  • Analyze/Demonstrate ways in which "Read-It-Later" tools provide powerful ways of capturing, manipulating, repackaging, archiving, and sharing information to meet different ends.
  • Evaluate and propose ways in which "Read-It-Later" applications can help meet individual time constraints, workflow, learning styles, collaborative tasks, and differences in platforms (desktops, laptops, smartphones, tablets, etc.)
